VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

In this article

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a technology that enables voice calls to be transmitted over the internet rather than traditional circuit-switched telephone networks. VoIP converts analogue audio signals into digital data packets and transmits them via IP networks. SIP trunking, softphones, IP phones, and unified communications platforms all operate on VoIP technology. VoIP calls can be routed to traditional PSTN numbers through voice termination carriers, enabling communication between IP-based and legacy telephone systems.

What is VoIP and how does it work?

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) converts your voice into digital data packets and transmits them over an IP network โ€” your broadband internet connection โ€” rather than a traditional phone circuit. When you speak, your VoIP device or software samples your audio, compresses it using a codec (such as G.711 or G.729), and sends the compressed packets across the internet to the recipient. At the other end, the packets are reassembled and converted back into audio. The entire process happens in milliseconds, producing a call experience indistinguishable from a traditional phone call when the network is of sufficient quality.

What is the difference between VoIP and SIP?

VoIP is the broad technology of transmitting voice over IP networks. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a specific signalling protocol used to set up, manage, and tear down VoIP calls. SIP is one of several protocols used in VoIP alongside H.323, WebRTC, and others, but it is by far the most prevalent in business telephony. Think of VoIP as the category (internet-based calling) and SIP as the language that VoIP devices use to communicate with each other and with carrier networks to establish calls.

What do I need to make VoIP calls?

To make VoIP calls you need: a broadband internet connection (minimum 100 kbps per concurrent call, though more is recommended for quality), a VoIP-compatible device (IP desk phone, softphone application on a computer or mobile, or a SIP-enabled PBX for office systems), and a VoIP service provider for routing calls to non-VoIP destinations (traditional PSTN numbers). For business use, a SIP trunk provider such as IDT Express supplies the carrier connectivity that lets your VoIP system call standard phone numbers worldwide.

Is VoIP better than a traditional phone system?

For most businesses, VoIP offers significant advantages over traditional PSTN phone systems: lower call costs (particularly for international calls), flexibility to add or remove lines without physical installation, easy scalability, integration with CRM and business software, and the ability to use numbers in any country regardless of physical location. The main consideration is internet dependency โ€” VoIP call quality is directly tied to your internet connection quality. With a stable broadband connection and a quality SIP trunk provider, VoIP consistently outperforms traditional ISDN lines in both cost and capability.
