Toll-Free Number

In this article

A toll-free number is a telephone number for which the called party (typically a business) pays the cost of the call, rather than the calling party. Toll-free numbers are identified by specific prefixes: 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, and 888 in North America; 0800 or 0808 in the UK; and equivalent formats in other countries. Businesses use toll-free numbers to encourage customer contact, build brand presence, and route inbound calls globally. Toll-free forwarding services route calls from a toll-free number to any destination worldwide.

What is the difference between toll-free and freephone numbers?

โ€˜Toll-freeโ€™ and โ€˜freephoneโ€™ describe the same concept โ€” a number where the receiving business pays the call cost rather than the caller โ€” but the terminology varies by country. In the US and Canada, the term โ€˜toll-freeโ€™ is standard, with numbers beginning 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, or 888. In the UK and Ireland, โ€˜freephoneโ€™ is used for 0800 and 0808 numbers. In Australia, 1800 numbers are the equivalent. The underlying principle is identical: businesses absorb call costs to remove barriers to customer contact.

Can I get a toll-free number for any country?

Toll-free number availability varies by country. Most developed economies have a national toll-free number range โ€” the US (800/8XX), UK (0800), Australia (1800), Germany (0800), France (0800), and many others. Some countries do not support toll-free inbound calling from mobile networks without surcharge, which is an important consideration for customer service lines. IDT Express provides international toll-free numbers and toll-free forwarding in dozens of countries, with coverage details available on the toll-free forwarding product page.

How does toll-free number forwarding work?

Toll-free forwarding routes calls received on a toll-free number to any destination phone number or SIP address you specify โ€” regardless of where that destination is located. A caller in the US dials your 800 number; your carrier receives the call and forwards it to your configured destination: an office in the UK, a contact centre in India, or a cloud PBX anywhere in the world. Forwarding rules can include time-based routing (business hours vs out-of-hours), geographic routing (route by caller location), and failover (if the primary destination is busy, route to a backup).

Can I forward a toll-free number to a mobile phone?

Yes. Toll-free numbers can be forwarded to any type of destination โ€” landline, mobile, SIP address, or PBX. When forwarding to a mobile number internationally, call charges apply for the forwarding leg (from the toll-free number to the mobile destination), and these are billed to the toll-free number owner. IDT Express supports forwarding to mobile destinations worldwide, with per-minute rates depending on the destination country and network. For high-volume customer service lines, forwarding to a SIP-enabled PBX or contact centre platform is more cost-effective than forwarding to a mobile.
